Celebrating a Legacy: Fionnuala Mc Gahern Retires from Mullahoran NS

12th Dec 2025

Thursday, December 11th marked a truly special day for the community of Mullahoran National School, as staff, pupils, and parents gathered to celebrate the retirement of beloved Principal, Fionnuala Mc Gahern.
Fionnuala's journey with Mullahoran NS began in 1999 when she joined as a teacher, and she went on to commence her distinguished role as Principal in 2008. Throughout her tenure, Fionnuala carried out her duties with remarkable enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment, always ensuring the well-being of her pupils was the central focus of the school.Fionnuala was not only a remarkable leader but a deeply supportive colleague. She inspired her staff each day, leading with kindness, understanding, empathy, and genuine care for their best interests.
The day’s celebration began with a celebratory Mass attended by Fionnuala's family, the pupils, staff, and parents. Fr Joe celebrated the Mass, creating a reflective and joyful atmosphere.
A highlight of the service was the beautiful music, expertly coordinated by Bernie O’Reilly, whose musicians and singers were described as "truly amazing," enhancing the sense of community and gratitude.
Following the Mass, family and staff gathered for a celebratory meal at Pikers Lodge, offering a chance for personal tributes and reminiscence.
The afternoon was filled with warmth and laughter thanks to a fabulous slideshow prepared by Sarah Cullen. This special presentation was a labour of love, featuring a collection of cherished photos, videos, and interviews with past pupils. A particular source of amusement was a compilation of junior infant pupils giving their hilarious takes on "what they would do if they were principal for a day."
As a lasting tribute to her profound impact, Fionnuala was presented with a beautiful painting of Mullahoran NS. The artwork was specially commissioned and painted by the very talented artist, Phil Atkinson.
It was evident throughout the day that Fionnuala has had an incredible and positive impact on the entire school community. While she will be deeply missed, her legacy of dedication and pupil-centred education will be carried on by the staff and pupils of Mullahoran NS for many years to come.
